Intellectual Property

IP protection comes in the following forms:

A Patent

A patent grants the right to an inventor to preclude others from making, selling, or offering to sell the patent holders’ invention. There are several stages in obtaining patents. It is an area where specialist patent advice is necessary.

A Trade Secret

A trade secret is information that derives independent economic value from not being generally known.

Copyright law

Copyright Law protects original works of authorship like books, music, jingles etc.

Trademark Law

Trademark law protects particular brands, phrases, designs etc.

Intellectual property is an important element in influencing whether you get angel or venture funding at all. In addition, it is an important element of the pre-money evaluation (good for you as long as you get it right).

  • It is important to protect the Intellectual Property (IP) of your enterprise.
  • Angel investors in early stage deals expect these issues to be dealt with in the seed round.
  • The quality and experience of your patent attorney is really important.
  • Your wife’s second cousin’s room mate is not acceptable.
  • Entrepreneurs cannot afford to skimp on the quality of the patent attorney.
